Congratulations to Townsend Benard, who was honoured last night at the University of Toronto’s Annual Awards banquet.

The Blues honoured men’s pole vaulter Townsend Benard as the George M. Biggs Trophy award winner for his outstanding athletic achievement, scholarship and community service during his time at the University of Toronto.

A two-time CIS bronze medalist in men’s pole vault, Benard also won the OUA silver medal in 2012 and earned an OUA all-star nod. He is a three-time CIS academic all-Canadian and has won the Dr. Donald H.H. MacKenzie and Worts Lennox smart scholarships, as well as the University of Toronto scholar award.

A native of St. Catharines, Ont., Benard served as the co-chair of the Council of Athletic and Recreation (CAR), which is responsible for overall athletics and recreation policy, including: allocation of funds to program areas, staffing policy, and rental and fees policy. He sat on many sub-committees as a member of CAR, including KPE sponsorship, awards, budget, equity, membership and restricted funds.

The fifth-year kinesiology major won the Dean’s student leadership award and the KPE Kirkwood award in 2012 and 2013, and was also a third-year representative on the R. Tait McKenzie Society.
